INTERNATIONAL NURSES WEEK MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Dear Nurses of St Joseph Mercy Hospital, St Joseph Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and Mercy Resident Care

As we recognise and celebrate International Nurses Week under the theme “ Our Nurses – Our Future”, the Board and Executives of this hospital wish to extend sincere gratitude to you individually and collectively for choosing to make this selfless vocation your profession and secondly, for choosing to practice under the umbrella of St Joseph Mercy Hospital. Like the countless patients and their relatives, friends and associates who have benefitted from your commitment, we also are happy with the high quality of care you have given. Everyone recognises that what you did and continue to do is being done at a sacrifice. We however know that you will not choose another profession as this is what you were called to do and you answered the call.

The total commitment demonstrated daily in the care of patients has become a signature of Mercy Nurses and this is acknowledged both near and afar. This is only possible because of your demonstrated ability to balance the responsibilities to your families and the duty to your patients. Both tasks require the same dedication and attention to detail. Yet one does not take priority over the other. The Theme for this year’s observation therefore compliments and reminds us of the Nightingalean spirit that is at the heart of the nursing profession. It is also confirmation that you dear Mercy Nurses have removed any lingering doubts that “Our Nurses are Our Future”.

The recognition that has been accorded to the importance of nurses as embodied in this year’s theme speaks to the importance of health care in the future of mankind. Without nurses the health of the society cannot be guaranteed and the future depends on healthy citizens to support great societies. You therefore have an added role as Mercy Nurses to continue being beacons to the younger generations and standard bearers to your peers as we stride into the future. Carry the torch proudly.

We the Board and Executives of this hospital wish to once again register our appreciation of your service on behalf of our clients. We also wish to extend congratulations to you and your families as this observation of the birthday of the pioneer of nursing is observed. May you continue to keep the Nightingale lamp burning brightly for the dispensing of nursing care.

Highest regards

Enoch W Gaskin
