Physiotherapy at Mercy Hospital

Physiotherapy is a treatment to restore, maintain, and make the most of a patient’s mobility, function, and well-being.
Physiotherapists get you involved in your own recovery through the use of a wide range of techniques and approaches that guide your rehabilitation and can include the use of targeted and progressive exercises alongside physical techniques including mobilization.
This department is headed by a doctor who is certified in sports medicine and along with our four Orthopedic specialists, cover a wide range of treatment to ensure patient recovery.

There are four general types of Physiotherapy
• Geriatric Physical Therapy.
• Sports Physical Therapy.
• Orthopedic Physiotherapy.
• Pediatric Physical Therapy.

Most of the work done at Mercy Hospital involves Orthopedic Physiotherapy which is all year round and sports physiotherapy which is mainly seasonal eg; annual fitness games and sporting events.
Before a physiotherapy regimen is done, the patient has to be referred by a specialist doctor who determines the number of sessions needed to ensure positive results,
There’s an enormous body of research supporting the use of physiotherapy for treating musculoskeletal problems. For example, dozens of studies have demonstrated that physiotherapy can help with joint injuries and pain relating to the back, neck, shoulder, knee wrist, and ankle.
We provide a service for people with a variety of health problems or conditions. These can typically include:
• A recent injury, such as whiplash, knee strain, or sprained ankle
• Surgery, such as knee replacement, ligament reconstruction, or shoulder surgery
• Soft tissue problems, such as after a fall.
• Muscle weakness or imbalance
If you are experiencing any problems with movement, joint pain, or if you are overcoming a chronic illness, please see your doctor or specialist who can advise you on what treatment is right for you.
