Guyana’s first skull transplant surgery was successfully performed on a 23-year-old single mother, Ms. Analisa Latchman from Essequibo Coast by a team of Doctors led by neurosurgeon Dr. Amarnauth Dukhi. The surgery was performed at Mercy Hospital on Saturday 22 August 2020.
KLS Martin Group of the US through the GoFundMe campaign acquired the skull implant. As Dr. Dukhi performed surgery free of cost and Mr. Chris Fernandes, Vice-Chair of Mercy Hospital helped the patient with hospital costs being underwritten. This surgery was performed in partnership with NeuroSpine Services Inc of the Mercy Hospital which offers brain and spinal care.
In a press conference that was held at the hospital, Dr. Dukhi expressed the importance of the surgery since it is done in first-world procedure in a third-world health sector.
Dr. Ayesha Wilburg, Medical Director of the hospital expressed her kudos to the team that performed this surgery. She expressed, “I would like to thank Directors of the Board of SJMH, Nursing services, theatre staff, radiology staff, laboratory staff, client services, pharmacy, quality department, housekeeping and the administrative team for providing the support needed to ensure Dr. Dukhi’s skull transplant surgery was successful. Everyone’s support and commitment to quality patient care made this surgery successful. I am proud to be part of our caring team.”
