In 1946, the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital School of Nursing was established a recognized by the Government of Guyana. This venture under the stewardship of the Sisters of Mercy, Dr Caesar Romiti, Sr. Kateri and Sr. Generosa started up the now legendary Mercy Hospital Nursing School.
The school has always been one that is well thought about large and worldwide its success is mainly due to a strong statement of belief, its Mission Statement and Aim to provide the highest Quality Services to all of Guyana with a spirit of compassion, commitment and professionalism.
The school continues to be associated with the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas and is committed to providing health care to all persons regardless of religion, gender, age or ethnic origin. We believe that service to the sick and dying is an opportunity for those serving and those being served to come to a deeper understanding of the true meaning and gift of life.
This year as the hospital celebrates its 75th year in existence the school proudly celebrates the enrollment of its 72nd Batch of Nurses. During the many years of existence, the school of Nursing curriculum teaches a holistic approach to provide care for our patients, its programme along with the national programme guides’ individuals to acquire knowledge, professional skills and attitudes, when dealing with clients, their family and members of the communities.
Our programme prepares you for the world at large it helps one to see their Nursing profession not only as a career but as a vocation made up of a scientific and artistic approach. The Professional Nursing programme is a three-year course that is run concurrently it is geared to cover all aspect of care given to our clients some of the topics covered during the periods include, Anatomy and Physiology, PBL (Problem Based Learning), Nursing Professionalism, Clinical nursing, Microbiology, Pharmacology and Community Health Care. To date, approximately 1200 Registered Nurses have graduated from the School and are employed worldwide. At this time we with all those who have passed through our care and those who have cared for them God’s blessing.
